Spring means a wardrobe change, making it a great time to rearrange your closets. Done right, this can make your life easier now and lay the groundwork for an easier change in the fall when cold weather returns.
Begin by taking everything out of your closet. Don’t groan. It will make your life easier in the long run.
- vacuum your closet
- dust any shelves
- look for any signs of insects, etc.
Dust, crumbs and food stains can attract bugs so a clean closet creates a solid foundation. Go through all of the clothing you removed from your closet. Ideally, try on everything. Does it still fit? Do you dislike how you look in it? Do you love how it looks?
More importantly, will you wear it at least twice a season? If you won’t or it doesn’t fit or you don’t like how you look in it, put it in a discard pile. Even better, put those items straight into bags or boxes to be donated to a charity or sold.
Of the items you’re keeping, sort everything into one of these categories:
- year-round clothing
- winter-only clothing
- summer-only clothing (if any were in your closet)
While you’re sorting them into categories, or while you were trying them on, look for any stains. Clean clothing is less likely to attract bugs. Stains can also oxidize over time and become permanent. When in doubt, clean everything before putting it away.
Pro tip: Avoid using fabric softener, starch, sizing or bleach on clothing before storing it. Residue from those items can attract insects. If you have to use bleach, make sure the item is rinsed well.
Good Folding Makes a Difference
Before you start putting away winter clothing, learn a better folding method. Marie Kondo’s KonMari method of folding has caught on because it’s very efficient, lessens wrinkles and allows a lot of items to be stored in a smaller area than other folding methods.
Choose your off-season storage method carefully. Consider where and how you’re storing, and what you’re storing when selecting containers. You want containers that will store and protect your clothing so it’s in good shape for you next season.
Lastly, return the year-round clothing and summer clothing to your closet, which should have more space now. Now you’re ready for summer!
Pro tip: To get a sense of how much of your wardrobe you actually use, put items in your closet with the hanger backward, meaning the open side is facing you. Then as you wear an item of clothing and rehang it, reverse it to the normal direction. In a month you’ll get a sense of what you actually wear. Studies show that most people wear 20 percent of their clothing 80 percent of the time. If so, consider another purge of clothing after this test – or just rotate what you wear more often.
