Tips for Spring Cleaning

Looking for a reason to get organized? We’ve got a great way to get motivated coming up soon! Spring is coming and spring cleaning is as American as apple pie. The first appearance of warmer weather is a perfect opportunity to air out your home and get things in order. A lot of stuff can pile up indoors during the winter months and let’s face it, you may just need an excuse to finally take care of that long-delayed major house cleaning.

Whatever the reason, spring cleaning will make you feel less cluttered and really make it the season of renewal. Box&Co can help you store items while you get organized and we want to give you some tips about spring cleaning.

What to Know Before You Start Spring Cleaning

You might be focusing on a room or two or you might be attempting to reorganize your entire home. No matter how big or little your spring cleaning project is, it’s important not to feel overwhelmed by it. The best way to avoid drowning in self-doubt is to organize and compartmentalize. Don’t think of it as the whole house. Take it one room at a time. If the room you’re cleaning is a disaster, take it one section at a time. A lot of little jobs add up to one big job.

The Spruce recommends a system for taking care of de-cluttering by separating items into five piles:

  • Trash: Items that are absolutely going out. Be brutally honest with yourself. Don’t be a packrat.
  • Recyclables: This is trash that can be recycled like paper or glass.
  • Fix/Mend: These are items that you don’t want to throw out but need repairs or even just a thorough cleaning.
  • Donate: Items in good condition that you’re not keeping. Give them to a charitable organization.
  • Put Away: Items that need to go back where they belong or need to go into storage. Be ready to contact Box&Co.

The Cleaning Process

When de-cluttering; clear out drawers, nightstands, cabinets, cupboards, closets, hallways and entryways and separate them into your five categories. You’ll be amazed at how much space opens up.

Now it’s time to take care of the actual job of cleaning. Readers Digest suggests you focus a big part of attention on furniture, appliance, and carpeting. Carpets and upholstery pick up a lot of dirt in the winter.  A rented carpet cleaner is a good idea but make certain you test it before putting it on your good upholstery.

When taking care of walls, dusting works great but washing them down with a sponge and a mixture of water and a hand dishwashing detergent is better. If you’re going to mop your floors, why not finish them as well? This will keep them in good condition for years to come. It’s also a good idea to dust and clean ceilings and light fixtures.
